Start from Chavela's versions of two key songs by José Alfredo Jiménez--

Make a close study of the letra--see how each songs is built--images, narrative, point of view, setting, moment in time (Ella is from the past--but is it a memory? El último trago is in the present--but with a strong sense of the "conditional" (subjuntivo). How do the lyrics work with music? Listen to the versions by Chavela (you have them on your download) and compare with the way José Alfredo sings them (easily available online).
Each one tells us something particular about México. How so? And about your own culture?
Chose one of the songs as focus for this week's project.
